The Durban Gauteng corridor is the most significant General Freight corridor in the South African rail system. It connects the Port of Durban and the proposed DDOP (Durban Dig-out Port) to Gauteng. About 27 mtpaof 87 mtpaGF in 2014/15 was transported on this corridor, of which 8.9 mtpawere containers, (mainly import and export) via Port of Durban.
The Transnet FDM indicates tonnages up to 105 mtpaon the corridor by 2046, (30 year forecast). Containerisedtraffic will account for more than 50% of this tonnage by 2046. Demand is expected to exceed capacity on this corridor from 2026. Even with operational efficiency improvements at that stage, extra capacity is required from 2029. Capacity is firstly added by shorter headways (block splits), then by moving to 75-wagon container trains, and then by moving to 150-wagon DP container trains & 100-wagon DP GFB trains. The Gauteng Freight Ring also requires doubling of single-line sections. All sections require electrical upgrades, and bypassing of certain PRASA sections (Union-City Deep, Skansdamlink, Cato Ridge Bypass link, Rosslyn link)

Guinea, Mali, Niger, NigeriaWest Africapap1
Construction of a dam and hydroelectric plant of 90 MW on the Niandan River in Guinea with a reservoir of about 5 billion m3 of water.
The project has two components, namely:
- Strengthen the institutional and financial capacity of the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) to sustainably fulfill its basic mandate; and
- Facilitate evidence-based decision-making in the process of preparing Fomi's multipurpose dams and in parallel strengthening of ABN's capabilities through its direct involvement in this complex project.
The Fomi Dam initiative has been continued in two related projects:
First, an APL-1 project on water resources development and sustainable ecosystem management (WRD SEM) funded by the World Bank (P093806) and secondly, the Niger River Basin Management Project. It is unclear if the APL-1 project is still active through a follow-up phase which might likely be named APL-2.
The Niger River Basin Management Project was approved for CIWA funding in November 2014 and aims to strengthen the NBA's capacity to prepare for Fomi in two phases, namely:
a) facilitate dialogue between stakeholders in Guinea, Mali and the NBA to develop a roadmap on how to proceed with the preparation of the Fomi dam project; and
b) Complementary studies to the main preparatory studies supported by WRD SEM (APL-1).

The design for the LAPSSET higway components provide for a heavy transportation route from Lamu to South Sudan through Garissa, Isiolo, Kisima and Nginyang to meet the existing Kenya - South Sudan road at Lokichar, from where it continues to the border at Nadapal. The Lamu - Isiolo - Lokichar - Lodwar - Nadapal section measures about 1,300 km. The Northern Branch of the corridor to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia is the Isiolo- Moyale section which is also part of LAPSSET Corridor road. Construction on this section has been completed and the One Stop Border Post (OSBP) construction is currently underway.
The project is divided into four sections as follows:
Lamu - Garissa Road -263km
Garissa-Isiolo Road - 305km
Isiolo - Nginyang Road - 212km
Nginyang - Lokichar - Nadapal - 533km

WaterJema Integrated Watershed Management Project
EthiopiaNorth-Eastern AfricaZ1.00.00
The Jema sub-basin measures 3,241 km2 in area, and is part of the Abbay (Blue Nile) River Basin located in the Central Ethiopian Highlands. The sub-basin partially covers six woredas in Amhara State Region. The sub-basin is characterized by high elevations (2,500 â€" 3000 m amsl in most parts; down to 1,200 m in the lowest part), steep slopes, high rainfall intensity that generates considerable runoff, intensive cultivation, overgrazing and deforestation. These characteristics, and the use of inefficient traditional farming methods and growing human population on naturel resources lead to soil erosion, soil fertility decline, water scarcity and deepening poverty.
The objectives of the Jema project are fourfold, to: (a) improve natural resources management through sustainable land management practices; (b) improve agricultural productivity by introducing improved crop and livestock technologies; (c) enhance Institutional capacity through various capacity building activities; and (d) diversify the livelihoods of local communities with a focus on women and youth by introducing different off-farm activities. The project as three components on sustainable land management, livelihoods support, and institution capacity building.
The project was identified in 2007 under the Cooperative Regional Assessment (CRA) of the Eastern Nile Watershed Management Project (ENWM), which was itself part of the Integrated Development of the Eastern Nile. Full feasibility and project preparation studies were completed in 2012 under the Project Delineation and Prioritization study supported under the NBI Institutional Strengthening Project (ISP). Both phases of the studies were funded by the Nile Basin Trust Fund.Â

TransportT.05.04.06Kalemie Port Upgrading
Democratic Republic of CongoCentral Africapap1
~~At this stage , the project does require a feasibility study in order to define to the attention of the investor ,all aspects regarding the project namely economic , social, technical and environmental.
This port was built during colonial rule by 1928 and since then big rehabilitation works had never taken place ; its infrastructures are nowadays in a very dilapidation state as described below :
The port of Kalemie is managed by the DRC Railways company « SNCC » .The maintenance of seawalls, du chenal d’accès, des jetées is under the supervision of « la Régie des Voies Fluviales, RFV». The main activity of the port is linked to railways traffic.
The port consists of a mole of 383,5 m moving toward the lake :
On the internal side, there is a appontement in an armed concreteof 9,5m width,
On the external side, embankments andrip- rapsdo protect the structure against theswells.
The port does also have a dry dock which is in operations, but we do have a lot of difficulties regarding its functioning ie a launching longitudinal slipway has not been used since 1974 because of a very badstate and the hydrocarbon jetée is partially destroyed and currently out of service .
These structures are deteriorated and no longer offer conditions regarding security for port activities.
The port being located on the Northern side of the l"’embouchure of Kalemie river, the courseof sand being brought by the river from south to north is being felt under the l"’influence of dominant wind moving from south-east to theendand inside the pier. The overhanging of sand dangerously decreases the width on the entrance to the port , influencing by that also theanchorage . This quantity of sand can be estimated to ± 400.000m3.
All these deteriorated structures together with port cranes lead to a big bottleneckthat greatly reduces the corridor evacuation capacity.
