Construction of the One-Stop Border Post between South Sudan and Sudan, which lies on the Northern Corridor.
Maydon Wharf is the largest Break Bulk and Dry Bulk precinct in the Port of Durban and in the TNPA ports system. Seven of the 15 berths were constructed 60 years ago of steel sheet piles that are now heavily corroded and at high risk of structural failure. Piecemeal repairs cannot guarantee the structural integrity of the quay walls as they have deteriorated severely and reached the end of their serviceable life. Although restrictions have been placed on the operational loading of these quays to ensure short term safety, they must be replaced as soon as possible for on going sustainable operations.
The scope entails the construction of 7 combi steel pile quay walls, inclined grouted anchors with associated cope beams, quayside paving, bollards, fenders and new services. The berths will be dredged and deepened to -14.5m CD with rock scour protection.
Phase 1 of the project required the extension of Berth 12 by 12m into the harbour to align with Berths 13 -15 and to create an additional deep water berth to handle large vessels.
Phase 2 entails the reconstruction and deepening of berths 1 -4, 13 & 14.

TransportModernization of the RN01 (Trans-Saharan) between Ghardaia and Tamenrasset (Algeria Section)
Algeria, Chad, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, TunisiaCentral Africa, North Africa, West Africa
National Road No. 01 stretches from Algiers to Mali and Niger over more than 2400 km. It has been twinned for approximately 500 km (between Algiers and Laghouat) and includes a branch towards Tunisia, continuing all the way to Lagos and N'Djamena. The Trans-Saharan route begins from the East/West Highway in the Wilaya of Blida (located 50 km west of the capital Algiers) and extends to Ain Guezzal at the border with the Republic of Niger, covering around 2400 km, with a branch extending to the Republic of Mali.
The current state of the Trans-Saharan route is as follows:
From the junction with the East/West Highway to the northern limit of the Wilaya of Ghardaia, approximately 580 km, the road is twinned. For 53 km (between the junction with the East/West Highway and the town of Berrouaghia), it has the characteristics of a highway (the works are nearing completion);
From the northern limit of the Wilaya of Ghardaia to the town of El Gholéa (El Menea), over 268 km, twinning studies are ongoing, conducted by an Algerian engineering firm;
From the southern limit of Ghardaia to Ain Guezzam at the border with Niger, approximately 1257 km, 342 km are under preservation works, while the remaining 915 km require preservation operations (not yet scheduled).
The goal is to increase the capacity of the Trans-Saharan route by twinning the remaining 1525 km. It is also noteworthy that the entire length of the Trans-African road is paved. As a prime example of a trans-African project, contributions from African entities to the development and modernization of this axis are highly desired.
Objective and Rationale for the Project:
This North-South corridor facilitates regional integration. It offers African countries, particularly those in the Sahel, the possibility of access to the Mediterranean Sea and the use of Algerian ports, especially in their trade with European countries. The Trans-Saharan road is connected to the East/West Highway in the Wilaya of Blida (about 50 km west of the capital Algiers). It thus facilitates East/West exchanges, particularly with neighboring countries Morocco and Tunisia.

The NWAS is one of the major North African transboundary groundwater basins shared by three North African countries (i.e. i.e. Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia) which covers an area of more than one million square kilometres. The NWSAS can be categorised as a multi-layered system of aquifers which embodies a huge stock of non-renewable groundwater.
WaterW.06.01Noumbiel Multi-Purpose Dam
Burkina Faso, GhanaWest Africapap1
The Noumbiel Multi-purpose Dam is a planned infrastructure project on the Black Volta River, located on the border between Burkina Faso and Ghana. The project aims to construct a dam with a reservoir for multiple uses, including hydropower generation, irrigation development, water supply, and flood control. It is a key project within the Volta River Basin and is recognized under the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA). The dam is intended to regulate river flow, contributing to energy security and agricultural productivity in both countries. Technical details from recent studies indicate a focus on optimizing the dam's height and storage capacity to balance power output with environmental and social impacts.
The study of the Ntem River Bridge is part of the Kribi-Campo-Bata maritime route linking the port of Kribi to Cameroon and Bata in Equatorial Guinea. The inter-capital connections study will identify missing links and determine the technical and economic feasibility of the construction of a crossing structure and the development of a single border control post at the border of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. It will make technical, legal and financial recommendations for the management and operation of the Yaounde-Kribi-Bata-Libreville development and corridor.
WaterW.07.01Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System
Chad, Egypt, Libya, SudanCentral Africa, North Africa, North-Eastern AfricaIGAD
The Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS) underlies the countries of Chad, Egypt, Libya and Sudan, the total population of which is over 136 million. It is the world’s largest ‘fossil’ water aquifer system.
The project scope involves:
Developing a standard mechanism for monitoring the development of the aquifer
Capacity building/ training for field investigations/monitoring of groundwater in four countries
Creating a legislative framework for attaining principles of cooperation and equitable utilization
Developing framework for the implementation of the regional strategy for utilization of the NSAS
Â
The Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS) underlies the countries of Chad, Egypt, Libya and Sudan, the total population of which is over 136 million. It is the world's largest ‘fossil' water aquifer system stretching over approximately 2.6 million square km in Northeast Africa. Fresh groundwater reserves in the aquifer system is estimated at 372,950 billion cubic metre (BCM), out of which only 3.9% is recoverable with present?day technology. The riparian countries sharing the aquifer system face similar problems of arid climate, scarce surface water resources, persistent droughts and fragile ecosystems. The aquifer is a critically important source of water in this arid desert region and will be increasingly in demand in the future. Hence, all four countries have given priority to linking the NSAS groundwater exploitation to national development strategies and plans. Growing pressures on the aquifer system pose threats to both the quantity and quality of the resource and could, if not appropriately managed, lead to transboundary/shared problems and tension.

The iron ore line is the main export channel for iron ore from the mines in the Northern Cape to the Port of Saldanha. The current capacity of the ore line is 60mt with 58mt for export and 2mt for the domestic market. Transnet plans to expand the corridor by increasing the capacity of the ore line to 75mt due to the increased demand on the ore line. The expansion programme will not only support the 2 major iron ore exporters Kumba and Assmang but also junior and emerging miners.
The iron ore corridor contributes significantly to the GDP of South Africa. Incremental capacity solutions will be designed to support further increases in demand up to 90mt in the long-term. The project will also result in the standardisation of the ore line locomotive fleet with a simplified maintenance and operating methodology.
The estimated capital requirement for 71mtpa is currently at R15bn (escalated), and includes a new berth, ship loader and stacker-reclaimer. Some rolling stock and rail infrastructure will also be required.
