LAKE / RIVER BASED ORGANISATIONS

What are L/RBOs?

Lake and River Basin Organizations (RBOs) play a pivotal role in the sustainable management of transboundary water resources. These organizations facilitate cooperation among riparian states, ensuring the equitable and efficient use of shared water bodies. They are essential in addressing the complex challenges of water management, including environmental sustainability, economic development, and conflict resolution.

Key Functions

  1. Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM): RBOs promote IWRM principles to balance water use for various needs, such as agriculture, industry, domestic use, and ecosystem conservation.
  2. Conflict Resolution: By providing a platform for dialogue and negotiation, RBOs help mitigate and resolve conflicts over water resources among riparian states.
  3. Data Collection and Sharing: These organizations collect, analyze, and share hydrological and environmental data to support informed decision-making.
  4. Policy Harmonization: RBOs work towards harmonizing water management policies and regulations across member states to ensure coordinated and effective management.
  5. Capacity Building: They offer training and technical assistance to enhance the capabilities of member states in water resource management.
