Project Overview

The Lamu port project comes under the Lamu Port and Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor's infrastructure projects which include railway lines. The project is located in Manda Bay and to the North end of the Kenyan coast, bordering with Somalia. The project specifically focuses on the development of a master plan for Phase 1 of the regional port capacity and regional rail linkages.

Description

<p>The project scope will cover construction of the first nine deep sea berths at the Lamu Port in Manda Bay to contain Crude Oil and Coal Terminals, General Cargo and Bulk Cargo Terminals. </p>

<p>This may involve some of all of the following activities, i.e. dredging and reclamation; construction of berths and yards; construction of revetment, causeway and road; construction of buildings and utilities; procurement of equipment and tug boats; etc.</p>

Objectives

<p>The LAPSSET Corridor infrastructure projects will create easy interconnectivity within the country and improve linkages to neighboring countries. Furthermore, they will attract private sector investment in infrastructure development and management in the country.</p>

<p>The additional capacity created will reduce congestion at the port of Mombasa, enhance service delivery and improve inter-regional trade in the region.</p>

<p>The LAPSSET Corridor Development Authority outlines the following objectives and expected outcomes of the project:</p>

<li>Creating seamless interconnectivity within the country, region and continent through transformative regional infrastructure;</li>
<li>Raising the profile of, and strengthening Kenya"'s regional Hub status in Eastern Africa;</li>
<li>Attract increased private sector investment in infrastructure development and management in the country;</li>
<li>Strengthen Security and socio-economic base of South Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and other East and Central African countries;</li>
<li>Establish efficient, reliable and sustainable infrastructure in South Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and other East and Central Africa countries;</li>
<li>Creation of employment opportunities in both specialized areas and manual labor thus reducing poverty levels in Eastern Africa; and</li>
<li>Create capacity in infrastructure industry in East and Central Africa through Technology and Skills transfer- human, technological, financial and consumers in the country. </li>
