Project Overview

The Kasese–Mirama Hills Standard Gauge Railway is a proposed western Ugandan section of the wider Mombasa–Kigali rail corridor. It is intended to connect Kasese and surrounding production areas with the Rwanda border and the regional standard-gauge network. The project remains at project-structuring stage.

Description

<p>The governments of Kenya and Uganda and Rwanda have committed to the development of a standard gauge railway that links the landlocked countries of Rwanda and Uganda with Mombasa port in Kenya. This project entails the section from Kasese in Uganda, to the border with Rwanda at Mirama Hills.</p>

Objectives

<p>The main objective of the railway line construction is to provide a reliable, efficient railway network leading to reduced cost of transportation and logistics between 15% to 20%. The decrease in transport cost can lead to sustained rapid industrialization and economic growth of the East African region.</p>
