The Egypt-Sudan project proposes an approximately 2,200 km continental electricity-transmission corridor from Cairo to Khartoum and Gedaref, using high-voltage alternating-current and/or direct-current technology.
The first stage will connect Egypt and Sudan along the Cairo-Cape Town road corridor through two high-voltage circuits. The PP2 concept considers 1,000 kV HVDC or a combination of 800 kV alternating-current and direct-current solutions, subject to technical and economic feasibility studies.
The preparation programme is intended to bring the project to international financial-institution standards and establish the technical, environmental, social, economic, procurement and financing basis for a future investment. The interconnector is expected initially to facilitate transfer of surplus Egyptian power to Sudan and, over time, support stronger links among the Eastern Africa Power Pool, Southern African Power Pool and wider continental market. The project must remain separate from the existing lower-capacity Egypt-Sudan connection. The MCDF grant is project-preparation finance and does not constitute financing of the main transmission works.
1. Establish a high-capacity (2,000 MW) electrical interconnection between Egypt and Sudan. 2. Enable bidirectional power trade between North Africa and the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP). 3. Create the first operational segment of the long-term vision for a Cairo-Cape Town Continental Interconnection. 4. Support regional economic development by providing access to more reliable and potentially lower-cost electricity. 5. Enhance energy security and system stability for both Egypt and Sudan through grid interconnection.
