The Bria-Lake Chad project explores a gravity-based transfer from a proposed Bria Dam in the Central African Republic to the Chari system, together with measures to reduce floodplain losses and improve flows into Lake Chad. It also considers hydropower, irrigation and flow-support components.
The project would improve the hydraulic capacity of the Chari River and design the infrastructure required to transfer water by gravity from the proposed Bria Dam toward the Chari and Lake Chad. The concept includes measures to reduce water losses in floodplains, address silting and maintain flows, while optimising possible hydropower and irrigation components and minimising adverse environmental and social effects.
Improve the hydraulic capacity of the Chari River; design a technically viable gravity-transfer system from Bria Dam; reduce water losses in floodplains; support Lake Chad water levels; address silting and flow-maintenance constraints; optimise hydropower and irrigation benefits; protect basin communities and ecosystems; and strengthen regional water security.
