The Jafara Plain project proposes solar- and wind-powered pumps for 15 pastoral wells in north-western Libya near the Tunisia border. It is intended to provide livestock water, support pastoral areas and wildlife reserves, increase vegetation cover and improve resilience to desertification and climate change.
The project will install renewable-energy-powered pumping systems on 15 pastoral wells in the western Jafara Plain. Solar and wind systems would enable sustainable groundwater abstraction for livestock watering, pasture development, vegetation restoration and the establishment or support of natural reserves along the Libya-Tunisia border area. The intervention is small-scale but combines water access, renewable energy, climate adaptation and land-restoration objectives.
Provide reliable livestock water; create and rehabilitate pastoral areas; support wildlife and natural reserves; increase vegetation cover; combat desertification; improve climate-change resilience; promote sustainable groundwater extraction; and strengthen livestock production and pastoral livelihoods.
