Fomi is a proposed multipurpose dam in Guinea intended to regulate flows in the Upper Niger, produce about 90 MW of hydropower, support irrigation, navigation, fisheries, water supply and ecosystem protection. The World Bank reported in 2025 that feasibility studies had been completed and financing was being sought for construction.
The Fomi project is a multipurpose dam proposed on the Niandan River in Guinea within the Upper Niger Basin. The approved project concept includes a reservoir of about 4,978 million cubic metres, a dam of approximately 50 metres, three generating units totalling around 90 MW, irrigated agriculture, fisheries, improved navigation and environmental-flow regulation. Guinea is the project member state, while benefits extend across the wider Niger Basin.
Regulate the Niger River regime and preserve basin ecosystems; improve living conditions through reliable, lower-cost electricity; meet water-supply and livestock needs; develop irrigated agriculture; support fishing and aquaculture; improve river navigation; promote ecotourism; and strengthen sustainable regional development across the Niger Basin.
