This Lake Chad project finances feasibility and in-depth technical work to address water decline, sedimentation, invasive plants, degraded navigation and reduced livelihoods. It includes bathymetric and sediment studies, water-quality analysis, a dredging and de-silting programme, navigation restoration, landing facilities, fisheries and irrigated-agriculture measures.
The project is a coordinated feasibility, technical-study and action-programme package for Lake Chad and its principal tributaries. It addresses poorly quantified sedimentation and siltation, invasive aquatic vegetation, unequal water distribution between the northern and southern basins, degraded navigation and declining economic activity. The planned work includes bathymetric surveys, physical and chemical analysis of sediments and water, design of dredging and de-silting interventions, navigation and landing facilities, and restoration measures for fisheries and irrigated agriculture.
Generate reliable technical evidence on silting, bathymetry, sediment and water quality; develop a dredging, de-sanding and invasive-species control programme; improve water distribution within the lake; restore navigation and landing facilities; revive fishing, irrigated agriculture and local economic activity; protect the Lake Chad ecosystem; and strengthen regional cooperation and water security.
