The Dawa River Multipurpose Dam is proposed approximately 20 km upstream of Rhamu Dimtu on the Ethiopia-Kenya border area, with Somalia included as a basin country. The concept combines irrigation, an estimated 8.2 MW of hydropower, flood mitigation, drinking and livestock water, fisheries and dry-season storage.
The project proposes a multipurpose dam on the Dawa River approximately 20 km upstream of Rhamu Dimtu in Kenya and near Boni in Ethiopia. Current PIDA specifications indicate an estimated dam height of about 90 metres, reservoir capacity of approximately 4.5 billion cubic metres and potential hydropower generation of 8.2 MW. The stored water would support irrigation, flood control, domestic and livestock water supply, fisheries and improved dry-season water availability across the transboundary basin.
Provide reliable irrigation water; generate hydropower; reduce flood impacts; supply water for people and livestock; store wet-season flows for dry-season use; support fisheries and livelihoods; modernise irrigation practices; protect water resources; and strengthen transboundary water security and economic development.
