Noumbiel is a proposed multipurpose dam on the Mouhoun/Black Volta near the Burkina Faso-Ghana border, with Côte d'Ivoire also identified as a member state. It is intended to produce hydropower, support irrigation and drinking-water supply, and create fisheries, livestock and tourism opportunities.
The Noumbiel project is a transboundary multipurpose dam proposed on the Mouhoun, close to the confluence with the Koulbi and the Burkina Faso-Ghana border. The approved PAP II submission describes a dam of about 40 metres, an indicative reservoir volume of 11.3 cubic kilometres, installed generation of approximately 62.4 MW, annual production of about 303 GWh and irrigation potential in Burkina Faso and Ghana. The project is intended to serve the directly affected countries while generating wider benefits across the Volta Basin.
Reduce poverty and support economic growth; improve climate resilience and living conditions; generate hydropower; expand irrigated agriculture and drinking-water supply; support fishing, livestock, tourism and productive local activities; improve access and regional connectivity; promote gender-responsive development; and strengthen cooperation among Volta Basin countries.
