The Palambo project proposes a regulation dam and hydropower plant on the Oubangui River upstream of Bangui. It is intended to improve electricity supply, maintain navigation during low-flow periods, support regional trade and contribute to possible water-transfer options toward Lake Chad.
The project comprises a dam at the Palambo Rapids on the Oubangui River and an associated hydroelectric plant serving Bangui and neighbouring areas of the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The dam would regulate downstream flows, particularly during the low-water season, while supporting electricity generation and safer, more reliable navigation between Bangui, Brazzaville and Kinshasa. The project is also linked conceptually to the Oubangui-to-Lake-Chad water-transfer initiative.
Provide a regular and sufficient electricity supply to Bangui and neighbouring areas; improve navigation and river transport on the Oubangui; enable economic and industrial activity through reliable power; strengthen multimodal Corridor 13; support regional integration; and provide enabling infrastructure for possible water transfer toward Lake Chad.
