Doubling of RN06 Mascara-Bechar and RN50 Bechar-Algeria-Mauritania Border

PIDA Code: T.RD.26.05

Project Overview

The project combines two major Algerian road-doubling programmes: approximately 500 km of RN06 between Mascara and Bechar and approximately 1,700 km of RN50 between Bechar and the Algeria-Mauritania border. It supports the Trans-Saharan and Algeria-Mauritania transport corridors.

Implementation maturity differs by section. Official reporting supports active road development and construction on parts of the wider Algeria-Mauritania route, while other RN06 sections remain under study or phased implementation. The umbrella record is therefore retained at S4B - Construction, with an explicit mixed-section qualification.

Description

The project will increase capacity and safety through construction of second carriageways on the RN06 corridor between Mascara and Bechar and the RN50 corridor from Bechar towards the Algeria-Mauritania border. The approved scope totals approximately 2,200 km across the two principal sections.

The programme is intended to improve north-south and cross-border connectivity, support trade with Mauritania and West Africa, reduce travel times and accidents and improve access to southern Algerian regions and border facilities.

The original financial field indicates an average unit rate of DZD 300 million per kilometre. It does not provide a source USD total, valuation date or confirmed length to which the rate should be applied as a single contract package.

Official evidence shows phased implementation of the wider corridor, including the Algeria-Mauritania road initiative, while some RN06 packages remain in study or preparation. The portfolio stage is S4B because construction is occurring within the approved umbrella scope.

Objectives

Increase road capacity and safety along RN06 and RN50; improve connectivity between northern and southern Algeria and the Mauritanian border; facilitate regional trade and transit; reduce transport time and vehicle-operating costs; and support economic development of southern regions.
