<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;">The Ruvyironza Multipurpose Water Resource Development Project is proposed in Bugendana Commune of Gitega Province, in Burundi about 9 km upstream of the Ruvyironza-Ruvuvu River confluence. The Project is part of the investment programs advanced by Burundi to the NELSAP for project preparation. Detailed identification studies were completed in 2012 after which it was included in the NELSAP strategic Plan 2012-2016, approved by the NEL Council of Ministers in January 2012.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 10.0pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;"><span lang="EN-ZA" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-ZA;">The project's investment preparatory studies will be conducted including full feasibility studies, detailed design, preparation of tender documents, independent Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) as well as Resettlement Action Plan (RAP). The project would enable the development of </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">14,674 </span><span lang="EN-ZA" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-ZA;">ha of irrigated agriculture in the 5 provinces of Cankuzo, Gitega, Karuzi, Muyinga and Ruyigi; hydropower generation of 22 MW which will increase the national capacity by 55% (from 40 MW). It is also expected to serve other auxiliary water uses such as municipal and livestock water supply, aquaculture, and restoration of critically degraded "hotspots" upstream of the contributing catchment. The reservoir is expected to inundate about 11 km of the Gitega-Ngozi highway, a few households, the Kibaya Bridge and the Kibaya automatic river gauge along the Ruvyironza River. The project will also include restoration of degraded hotspots upstream of the dam (catchment area upstream of proposed dam is 1,999 km<sup>2</sup>).</span></p>

The republic of Burundi will support in the joint review of the consultants' study outputs (reports), provide oversight and strategic guidance on project implementation activities, including providing baseline data and information. </span></p>
