Rapid population increase coupled with expanding agriculture, urbanisation, industrialisation, aging waste water treatment infrastructure and expansion of irrigation schemes in the Eastern Nile pose a serious threat to water quality in the EN Basin. The conflicts associated with access to water is expected be heightened by deterioration in water quality.

The Eastern Nile Transboundary Water Quality Monitoring Programme is one of several priority projects identified by the Eastern Nile states under the Eastern Nile Multi-Sectoral Investment Opportunity Analysis (MSIOA). This project will be used to develop a water quality monitoring programme within the whole of the Eastern Nile. Propose dproject components include the review of water quality standards and guidelines (and development of a standard set of water quality guidelines and standards for the EN Basin; review of baseline data on water quality and filling of gaps; identification of physical, chemical and biological water quality parameters to be monitored, developing and implementing a monitoring programme; review of legal, institutional and capacity related requirements; identification of existing and future pollution sources and pollutants and analysis of associated environmental, socioeconomic and health risks.

The project identification was completed in 2015 with funding from the World Bank under the Nile Cooperation for Results Project (NCORE).
