Project Overview

The Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway is an operating 472 km rail line connecting the Port of Mombasa with Nairobi. It carries freight and passengers, reduces pressure on the road corridor and provides the completed first major section of Kenya's standard-gauge network. The line is operational; the wider Mombasa–Kigali programme includes separate extensions.

Description

<p>The governments of Kenya and Uganda and Rwanda have committed to the development of a standard gauge railway that links the landlocked countries of Rwanda and Uganda with Mombasa port in Kenya. This project entails the section from Mombasa port to Nairobi in Kenya.</p>

Objectives

<p>The main objective of the railway line construction is to provide a reliable, efficient railway network leading to reduced cost of transportation and logistics between 15% to 20%. The decrease in transport cost can lead to sustained rapid industrialization and economic growth of the East African region.</p>
