The General Freight business presents the greatest opportunity for growth, with potential volumes increasing to125,0mtpa by 2022/23.
All rolling stock requirements have been prioritised for the areas where the capacity is required. The rolling stock
Maintenance strategy has been outlined earlier in this chapter under 'Transnet"™s maintenance strategies"™. Transnet
concluded the locomotive acquisition contracts in 2014 for the purchase of 1 064 locomotives (599 diesel and
465 electrical). The 1 064 Locomotive Programme has progressed well as over 350 locomotives have been accepted
into operations. The remainder of the locomotives will be commissioned into service by 2021/22.
The New-build Wagon Programme is continuing and approximately 11 000 wagons ordered since the commencement
of the MDS to the end of 2016/17 have been delivered. In all, 4 000 wagons are expected to be built over the next
five years.
