Project Overview

Rehabilitation of 320 km road between Bulawayo and Beitbridge Road

Description

The road runs in a south westernly direction from Bulawayo to the Beitbridge Border Post (between Botswana and South-Africa), covering a total of 320km. See this project on an interactive GIS map (with Google Earth satellite imagery and geo-referenced photographs) at www.tmsagis.co.za. The Bulawayo - Beitbridge road is part of the Regional Trunk Road Network (RTRN Link Nr 311).

Objectives

Bulawayo - Beitbridge Road Upgrading.

The Bulawayo to Gwanda road is one of six international trunk routes connecting Zimbabwe with its neighbouring countries of Zambia, Botswana, South Africa and Mozambique, and thus forms an important component of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) 'North-South Corridor"'. The route attracts international trade and the transportation of international cargo and bulk commodities between those countries.

The improvement of the road standard associated with the rehabilitation of this road section will result in greater efficiency of traffic movement and improved safety, and will thus lead to reductions in transportation costs and road maintenance costs, and a consequent increase in Zimbabwe"'s GDP. These advantages will also extend to other countries benefiting from the North-South Corridor.
